Peanuts or pretzels? Passengers on Southwest Airlines will no longer own to decide after the carrier announced that it plans to stop serving peanuts to protect people who are allergic to them.

«Peanuts forever will be part of Southwest’s history and DNA,»the company said in an emailed statement. «However, to ensure the best on-board experience for everyone, especially for customers with peanut-related allergies, we’ve made the hard decision to discontinue serving peanuts on every flights beginning August 1st.»

The snacks own endless been part of Southwest’s marketing campaigns.

The Dallas-based airline called its prices «peanut fares,» and it once published a corporate blog called «Nuts About Southwest.» A 1995 book about the company bears the title Nuts! Southwest Airlines’ Crazy Recipe for Trade and Personal Success.

Southwest says it served 106 million peanuts final year.

«We’ll miss the peanuts, but, at the finish of the day, it’s our Southwest Employees and the Hospitality they deliver that set us apart, far more than peanuts ever could,» the airline said.

The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act lists peanuts as one of the eight most allergenic foods, which together account for 90 percent of every food allergies.

As NPR’s Patti Neighmond has reported, «Allergic reactions to peanuts can range from hives or rashes to, in the most extreme cases, trouble breathing and even death.» According to the FDA, severe food allergies cause 150 deaths a year in the U.S.

and 2,000 hospitalizations.

In its statement, Southwest said its «ultimate goal is to create an environment where every customers — including those with peanut-related allergies — feel safe and welcome on every Southwest flight.»

«We hope that our free pretzels (and the amazing portfolio of free snacks on longer flights), served along with our legendary Southwest Hospitality, will please customers who might be nostalgic or unhappy to see peanuts go,» the carrier said in its statement.

Southwest joins several other carriers that do not serve prepackaged peanuts, including American Airlines and United Airlines.

Delta Air Lines says it won’t serve peanuts or peanut products if a passenger informs the company they own an allergy. Both Delta and Southwest tell flyers can also board early to wipe below their seats and trays before departure.

At FUMCN we strive to be a food allergy conscious school. Not only are we peanut and tree nut free, but we are also aware of children who are allergic to egg, milk, wheat, soy, sesame etc. This is to preserve the safety of our students with life-threatening allergies.

We expect the parents of allergic children to educate their kid and to educate us as well, but we hope every parents will study which children are allergic to which foods.

You can study about the food allergies and restrictions in your child’s class by reviewing the information above the snack preparation area in the A room. As we start the year, we desire to be certain that we don’t inadvertently bring peanut/tree nut residue into FUMCN. If you or your kid (or any siblings coming to drop-off or pick-up) eat or handle nuts, peanuts, peanut butter or other nut butters for breakfast or lunch, please wash face and hands thoroughly before coming to school.

Also be certain your kid is not eating in the clothes he/she will be wearing to school that day. This may seem extreme, but peanut/tree nut butter and oils can transfer extremely easily from hands or clothing to toys and surfaces at FUMCN. While this may seem overwhelming at first, please know that the teachers are happy to answer any questions and concerns you may have.

All children with serious allergies or health concerns should own a kid information sheet posted above the snack preparation area in the A room.  Please contact Ms. Juli if your kid has an allergy or health concern and you still need to finish one of these forms.

LITTLETON, Colo. — A high school community in Colorado is in mourning for a teenager who died Monday from a severe allergic reaction to peanuts.

CBS Denver reports Chatfield High School in Littleton has brought in additional counselors to assist students manage with the loss of 16-year-old Simon Katz, who was rushed to the hospital after taking a bite of s’mores containing peanut butter at a school homecoming event.

Simon Katz’s dad, David Katz, told CBS Denver that s’mores were one of Simon’s favorite treats.

But the teen apparently didn’t realize the one he ate in the Chatfield High parking lot was made with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. It caused him to go into anaphylactic shock.

His dad said Simon regularly carried an EpiPen in his car, but that day he’d gotten a ride with friends and didn’t own it with him.

When Katz began vomiting, his friends drove him home. His dad said he then rushed him to a nearby emergency room, giving him shots with his EpiPen as he drove and giving him CPR in the parking lot of the hospital, but it was too late.

«He was the most high energy person I’ve ever met,» his friend and band-mate Alex Sutton told the station.

«It’s really hard dealing with knowing that a amazing person can go for something that’s as little as a peanut allergy,» fellow band member Elias Williamson said.

Chatfield High is part of the Jefferson County School District, which has no districtwide rules restricting peanuts at school events, spokeswoman Michelle Balch Lyng told the Denver Post.

«At the finish of the day, peanut rules in our experience in schools are beautiful lax,» David Katz told the paper.

«School districts don’t desire to tell people they can’t bring that in.»

While food allergy deaths are rare, one expert said teenagers can face a greater risk.

«Teenagers are absolutely a higher risk for death from their food allergies. That can be for a couple of reasons. Certainly one of those we ponder is because they get a little less careful, so they’re not as excellent about asking what might be in a food; they sometimes take a few more risks and attempt things that they shouldn’t be eating,» Dr.

BJ Lanser with National Jewish Health said. «And they are also less likely to carry their epinephrine.»

More than 3 million people in the United States own some form of nut allergy. The prevalence of food allergies in children rose 18 percent between 1997 and 2007.

About 1 in 50 school-age kids in the U.S. is allergic to peanuts. In severe cases, an allergic kid can experience anaphylactic shock, a potentially life-threatening reaction that disrupts breathing and causes a sudden drop in blood pressure.

About 200 people in the U.S. die from food allergies each year.

The Jefferson County Coroner is doing an autopsy to determine if anything else played a role in Katz’s death.

Chatfield High will hold a moment of silence in Katz’s honor at the school’s homecoming football game Friday night.
